This week I interviewed my friend Drew Scott, a menswear and lifestyle vlogger and blogger. Drew and I met at FIDM (The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) and used hangout all the time when I lived in LA. He’s REALLY good at what he does and I truly admire his passion and creativity. I asked him a few questions about FIDM, social media, fashion and more:
Where you’re from/ Where you live now:
I am from the smallest town in California known as Tehachapi and I currently live in Downtown Los Angeles!
What you do:
I’m currently a student at FIDM but also run a men’s fashion and lifestyle blog/yt channel, which is probably my favorite facet of life.
One quote you live by:
I know this is 100% cliché but I truly do love “Everything happens for a reason”. It has always been a quote that resonated with me through both good and bad times.
When did you get started on social media and what inspired you to start?
I got started on Social media pretty late into the game. I was never one to use Myspace and I didn’t start Facebook or Instagram until after I graduated high school (essentially after everybody else). I got inspired to start when my interest in fashion started to peak and I gravitated towards social media for inspiration. I too wanted to share my outfits so that is when I started building my brand via social media.
What’s the main goal of your blog/YouTube channel?
My main goal is 100% to inspire others and also challenge myself. I absolutely love the entire process of taking video, editing, uploading and the entire process. Starting with almost nothing and Turing it into something is inspiring for myself and my viewers also really love the process. Overall, my main goal revolves around a positive environment, inspiring content and motivation.
Where do you get inspiration for new posts and videos?
I am definitely one to browse through YouTube and Instagram for ideas every now and then however I always have to ensure that what people see if worth their time. I think my inspiration really just stems from whatever I am feeling or doing. Maybe I purchased a lot of clothing recently so a haul would be best or maybe I’ve been wearing a lot of denim so a denim lookbook could be fun. Planning is also a huge help when it comes to developing new video or post ideas. Every Sunday I like to sit down and plan out the entire week of videos and posts.
How do you overcome a creative block?
I run into creative blocks a lot when it comes to blogging. I personally don’t think I am the best writer and through a blog all people see are photos and text. Video is a bit easier for me as I can talk and express what I want to “say” through moving pixels. When I get into a creative block I just let it happen. Going back to my quote mentioned above “Everything happens for a reason”.
What’s your favorite video that you’ve made so far?
I actually think the video that came out today was one of my favorites. I love creating a mood that people can resonate with. The video was my Summer Morning Routine but I think I love the way it was filmed. I used both a third person point of view along with my own perspective along with the color grading and overall concept. I personally just really love the vibe.
If you could collab with any brand who would it be? Why?
At the moment I have really been loving Vetements and Gucci. My dream collab would be with some form of high fashion company. I love the entire editorial aesthetic, which is what I strive for with my own content so probably a collab with Gucci would be amazing.
How has having an online presence impacted you personally?
I think before making videos, I was more shy and reserved. Ever since making videos and expressing my self, I feel that I have become more talkative and outgoing.
What’s your best advice for people who are trying to figure out their personal style?
It takes time. A style can’t be found or formed in just one day and the entire process can be extremely annoying. I also think my personal style is still evolving and I am always catching on to new things. I actually created an entire video on finding your personal style which can be found here.
What’s your best advice for girls/guys who want to get into YouTube/blogging but don’t know where to start?
My best advice would be to keep going. Immediate results are what a lot of beginners look for and sometimes it doesn’t happen. The social media world is so saturated that it can be hard to make an impact. Also ensuring that what you are creating is genuine and unique can only make people like you for who you really are. A lot of new bloggers try to copy others and it’s pretty recognizable, so having your own ideas and content is key.
What was your dream job growing up? Were you always into fashion?
I actually always wanted to be a hair colorist/stylist. However, as I stated high school and got into fashion myself, I realized that I wanted a career within the fashion industry. I really was never into fashion until about 10th grade when something just clicked. My current dream job is to create videos and photos with brands and be able to share them with the world.
If you could live in any city in the world right now where would you go and why?
London. I have never been to London however I watch and follow a ton of content creator based out of London. The entire vibe, the weather, the people, the fashion all seems incredible.
What’s one thing you want to accomplish by the end of 2016?
I will be graduating with my bachelors degree in business management in September and my parents are giving me a deadline on January 1st to start supporting myself 100%. I am a bit scared but I really want to accomplish supporting myself in every aspect by the start of 2017.
THANK YOU DREW! <3
