Today I’m doing an interview with my friend Koi Fresco. Koi and I met around 2 years ago through a mutual friend when I lived in Los Angeles. I really love his message/content because it’s so different from what’s out there. Not only does he make informative YouTube videos about science, spirituality, philosophy, etc, but he just finished writing his first book! He’s extremely well educated and I promise you’ll learn something cool from him. I asked him a few questions for you to get to know him better:
Name: Koi Fresco
Where you’re from/Where you live now: From Miami, Now in Los Angeles
What you do: Published Author / Educational Content Creator on YouTube
One quote you live by: For all our failings, despite our limitations and fallibility, we humans are capable of greatness. – Carl Sagan
When did you start your YouTube channel and what inspired you to start one?
Began in December of 2014, I was inspired by a friend who makes YouTube videos as well as the urge to help others.
What’s been your favorite video you’ve made so far & why?
My favorite video I’ve made so far is my video on Veganism, probably because it covers the more information more efficiently than any other video.
What’s the most rewarding part of what you do?
Knowing that my content can change lives for the better.
One of my favorite videos from you is “How To Be Happy”. Have you always been a positive person? Did you have a major turning point in your mindset or have you always been this way?
I haven’t always been happy actually, but have been now for years. Before this point I had to go through a lot of emotional turmoil and self retrospection to finally learn to shed all the negativity that surrounded me. My major turning point occurred when I was 18 years old.
What’s your best advice for someone who has trouble staying positive and finding happiness?
All I can say is that you must look and find something either within yourself or externally to live for. Without that happiness is hard to come by.
Each moment is it’s own unique piece of art and the notion that we can consciously understand that is more beautiful than any fantasy we could think up.
You are your own salvation and you must create your own happiness.
Who do you look up to the most and how have they impacted your life?
Carl Sagan. His work with simplifying Astronomy and Cosmology was decades ahead of it’s time. He combine honesty with science and spiritual awareness. His way of living and thinking was the catalyst for the changes in my life.
Congrats on finishing your book! What can we expect from the book and when does it release?
Thank you! My book is called, “A (Not So) Enlightened Youth” and it will be out June 28th on CreateSpace, Amazon & Kindle. Anyone wanting more information on the book can feel free to follow any of my social platforms: @KoiFresco
How long did it take to write the book and what was the most challenging part?
I came up with the idea in October of 2015 and completed the book in May of 2016. The most challenging part was the first 20 pages. It’s my first book and I think I was skeptical as to whether or not I could write one, but once I reached page 20 I realized I could, and a lot of the stress vanished.
What are your top 3 books that you think everyone should read?
Cosmos – Carl Sagan
Autobiography of a Yogi – Paramahansa Yogananda
Buddhism: Plain & Simple – Steve Hagen
What was your dream job growing up?
Growing up it was to work for my father’s business haha. Not any longer though, now my only goal is to write, travel and teach others as best I can.
If you had the opportunity to live in any city in the world right now, where would it be?
I’m where I want to be now, (Venice Beach, Ca) but if I had to go somewhere else I would probably chose Fujiyoshida, Japan.
It’s a medium sized town right at the base of Mt. Fuji that I’ve always been interested in.
You’ve already accomplished so much this year, but what’s one of your goals before 2016 ends?
My goal this year is to get my book into as my stores as possible. Other than that it is just to keep creating videos and creating connections with other like minded souls across the globe. 🙂
THANK YOU KOI! <3
